According to nominator, Karen Brownlee...
"This year Martha Donaldson has taken on chairing the efforts for the Long Beach Peninsula Empty Bowls Project. She has been a helper with the project for the past two years and since my retirement from the project, she has stepped up and continued the efforts to feed the hungry on the Peninsula. We have talked at length about what she could bring to the project, especially since she is not a ceramic artist. She has been able to keep with the community spirit of the project by asking the local artists to donate items to raffle, local musicians to be a part of a concert, and local restaurants to donate soup and bread. She really wants it to be a gathering of the community.
Martha has a spirit that leads her to help others. She is always busy with trying to help as many people as she can. This is probably due to her background in nursing. She also has a great desire to keep the Long Beach Peninsula a beautiful place to live. She is not afraid to talk to strangers and ask questions. She finds out people’s needs in a respectful way and many people have been invited to her home for meals and conversation.
Martha knows that the Empty Bowls is going to change under her leadership. But Empty Bowls is a type of project that takes many forms in many communities. Change can be good. She brings the love of community and the helping spirit that can’t help but be contagious. I can’t wait to see what will be achieved."
A warm round of applause to Martha!
